Software Maintenance Services

Your application is live. Now a dependency needs updating, an integration has changed, or a bug is slowing down the people who use it. Code and Trust provides software maintenance and support services for existing applications, including software another team built.

We start by reviewing the application and agreeing on what needs maintaining. The scope can cover bug fixes, dependency updates, integration changes, testing, releases, and documentation. If the underlying problem needs a rescue or rebuild, we identify that before treating it as routine maintenance.

Discuss your maintenance needs

Application maintenance services for software you already depend on

Maintenance keeps an existing application useful as its users, dependencies, and connected systems change. It can support an internal business tool, customer portal, web application, or mobile app. What belongs in the engagement depends on the codebase and the work agreed.

Bug fixes in business workflows

Reproduce the issue, trace the affected code and data, and agree on a fix. A broken approval, incorrect report, or failed checkout needs a test of the business outcome, not just a change that compiles.

Dependency and framework updates

Review the packages the application relies on, identify incompatible changes, and plan updates around the affected workflows. A major framework upgrade may need a separate modernization scope.

Integration changes

Maintain the connections to payment, CRM, accounting, and other systems when APIs, credentials, or data formats change. Check failed requests and the downstream records affected by a change.

Testing and release preparation

Add or update tests for the agreed changes, check affected user journeys in staging, and document deployment and rollback steps. The release scope includes what needs verification and who approves it.

How we take on an existing application

An inherited codebase needs an assessment before a support commitment. Bring what you have; missing documentation or an unreliable deployment process becomes part of the assessment, rather than an assumption that everything is ready.

  1. Establish access and context

Gather repository access, deployment instructions, environment details, integration documentation, and a list of the workflows your team depends on. Identify who controls the hosting, domains, and third-party accounts.

  2. Assess the application

Review the codebase, dependencies, existing tests, and release process. Reproduce the reported issues and separate immediate fixes from architectural problems or missing product decisions.

  3. Agree on the maintenance scope

Prioritize the backlog together. Record the systems covered, deliverables, support arrangements, release process, and exclusions before committing to ongoing work.

  4. Deliver and document changes

Work through the agreed priorities, verify the affected behavior, and keep the change record and operating instructions current so your team can understand what shipped.

Application support services: agree on the boundaries first

Application support here means engineering work on your software and its connected workflows. Before starting, we agree on how issues are reported and prioritized, who can authorize work, what access is needed, and how changes reach production.

Coverage hours, response expectations, incident escalation, third-party responsibilities, and any monitoring are terms to define in the engagement. A maintenance retainer does not by itself specify those terms or include every future feature request.

Hosting keeps infrastructure running; application maintenance changes the software running on it. If you need cloud configuration, deployment pipelines, or infrastructure monitoring, our DevOps consulting can be scoped alongside the application work. Cloud and vendor accounts need clear owners in either case.

Maintain, rescue, or modernize?

What you haveWhere to start
Working software with bugs, updates, and a manageable backlogMaintenance assessment and an agreed support scope
A stalled build, missing handover, or software that cannot reliably do its core jobSoftware project takeover to assess rescue, repair, or rebuild
An unsupported platform or architecture that blocks necessary changesLegacy modernization to assess an upgrade or replacement
An AI-built prototype that needs a path to productionAI app cleanup and production support

These can be successive stages. A rescue may come before ongoing maintenance; a working application may need a separately scoped upgrade later. We assess the code before recommending which path fits.

Software maintenance and support costs

Post-launch support and maintenance are scoped per engagement. Monthly retainers are from $1,750/month. Your scope depends on the application's condition, integrations, backlog, release process, and support arrangements. Assessment findings determine what we can commit to; the published floor is not a quote for every application.

Maintenance can follow a custom application build or begin with software you already have. For work we deliver, source code and IP transfer on final payment. Documentation and access handoff belong in the agreed deliverables.

Tell us what needs maintaining

Share the application's purpose, technology stack if known, who maintains it today, and the issues or changes you need help with. Describe any urgent business impact and what repository, hosting, and documentation access is available. We can then discuss an assessment and the right scope.
